Sure but how many comedians had one of their acts become part of a landmark Supreme Court Decision? It was important and still resonates, we spent time on it in my Communication Law class in college. He did a great many other things but FCC v. Pacifica was a big thing. RIP George. May you continue to look up at us…

I get a little tired of the knee-jerk mention of the “things you can’t say” reference. Maybe because the first I heard of Carlin I was a kid and it was one of the HBO specials in the 80’s. Granted, the “blue” parts of his routine made me laugh as a kid, but his humor seemed to mature quite a bit. He was a thinker, which seems rare these days.

Replace Lenny Bruce with Frank Zappa and that’s my list.
Both Carlin and Hicks were intelligent, and very funny. It’s a real shame that Hicks wasn’t as well received as he should’ve been, and a tragedy that he died well before his time. One admirable thing about Hicks, Carlin and Zappa is that they never let anything stop them from doing what they wanted to do, or saying what they wanted to say.
True heroes of our time.
